Mirdang is a north Indian version of the Mridangam. The Mirdang is an Ancient Indian barrel shaped percussion instrument famous in North India.
Mirdang's left side is the larger bass skin and the right hand is the smaller treble skin . The treble skin has three rings of black hardened paste (made from tar and clay) to help create a sound that resonante with harmonics. The bass fundamental tone will be the lower tonic. Traditionally, the Mirdang has been one of the favorite percussion instruments for norther India.
